The Ombudsman for Children from Croatia and the international organization Children of Prisoners Europe (COPE) jointly organized the International Conference „Children whose parents are in conflict with law: What is their best interest? How to fulfill it?" The Conference was held in Zagreb on 20 May 2016. The RS Deputy Ombudsman for Children, Mr Zlatoljub Misic, participated in the Conference.

The experiences related to the identification of the needs and best interest of children whose parent are in conflict with law, detained or imprisoned were shared during the Conference. The conditions in the prisons and related good practices were discussed as well as maintaining the contacts between the parents and children if it is in the interest of the child. The risks to which the child is exposed during the procedure in justice were discussed and in particular stressed the importance of providing support to the child and family while one parent is in the prison. During the Conference, good examples of the collaboration between the prisons and other departments, especially with the centers for social welfare, were presented.
