Association for helping children and women victims of domestic violence "Women's Centre Trebinje" has organized a two - day Conference on "Improvement of the laws that protect victims of domestic violence in Republic of Srpska".

The Conference was opened by U.S. Ambassador to B&H Patrick Moon, who stressed the importance of combating all forms of violence, especially domestic violence and the importance of improving the legislation in this area.

For the organizers, introductory presentation was given by Ljiljana Čičković, the President of the association "Women's Center" in Trebinje, who, among other things, emphasized the need for society to realize the gravity of domestic violence offenses, with an emphasis on violence against children and the need that social community recognizes adequate support mechanisms for victims of domestic violence in the family and the need to, with appropriate sanctions against perpetrators, act preventively. Also, she presented the draft amendments to the law changes in RS, in order to improve the situation of victims of domestic violence.

Numerous participants of the Conference, representatives of the U.S. Embassy, ​​OSCE Mission in B&H, OHR and EUFOR organizations, the District Court and the District Prosecutor's Office Trebinje, Banja Luka Faculty of Economics, Ombudsman for Children of RS, RS National Assembly deputies from the region, mayors of municipalities of Eastern Herzegovina, representatives of women's NGOs from RS emphasized the importance of adequate legislation in combating domestic violence and participation of society as a whole to improve the situation of victims of domestic violence.
 
The representative of the Ombudsman for Children of RS reminded the attendees of the fact that every form of domestic violence - is violence against children, even when children are not directly exposed to violence, they suffer. And any violence against children is trauma to the child with severe and lasting consequences. The one that happens in family in all its forms represents the most serious forms, of not just domestic, but violence in general, because it leaves serious psychological and physical consequences on the child. Also, she familiarized the participants of the Conference with the past activities of the Ombudsman for Children of RS, the initiatives to amend the existing laws and passing new ones, aimed at improving the situation of children victims, of not only domestic violence, but in general the victims of all forms of neglect, abuse and sexual exploitation, and preventive action on the perpetrators of these offenses.

Participants agreed on the conclusion that NGO sector in RS, engaged in this field, contributed greatly not only in strengthening public awareness on the presence of the problem and systemic organization but also with field work in support of victims of domestic violence, and constant reference to need to improve systemic solutions, and they have supported the presented proposals for changes of certain provisions of the Law on Protection against Domestic Violence, Family Law, in submitted proposals.
